Chapter 403 - 402: "Xu Su, That’s Not a Very Good Habit.
"..." Xu Su was speechless.
’So, besides calling him ’brother,’ what else did I do to Zhou Mochen!’
But Shen Chen had a point. ’Thank goodness I don’t have a nasty habit of flirting with anyone and everyone when I’m drunk. Otherwise...’
’If Zhou Mochen had caught me hugging another man and calling him ’brother’...’
Xu Su shivered. ’He would probably go ballistic.’
’He wouldn’t care whether I was drunk or not...’
"But I honestly never expected that’s how you two normally interact,"
Shen Chen’s voice cut through her thoughts. He smiled knowingly. "You’re really something else. In all these years, you’re the only one I’ve ever seen who can push Brother Zhou to that point."
Xu Su pursed her lips, not saying a word, as the tips of her ears quietly turned red.
Piecing together the scattered fragments of her memory, she could already make a good guess as to what she had done last night.
She buried her head in her food, ignoring the teasing from the person across the table.
The phone screen on the table kept lighting up. Xu Su glanced at it; it was a message from the elite group chat.
The offline meetup for the Qingxuan Sect was in two days. The hotel for the dinner had been booked, and Liu Yun was taking a headcount of who confirmed they were coming.
Xu Su quickly RSVP’d.
It went without saying that everyone in Beijing would attend. It was more complicated for those from other provinces, but with only two days to go, everyone could give a definite yes or no.
Then there was Sika, who was overseas. She posted a picture of a plane ticket for the next day, destination: Magic Capital. She had to go home first before coming to Beijing for the meetup, so she was another confirmed attendee from out of province.
The elite group didn’t have many members to begin with, and this meetup had been in the works for over a month, so the headcount was tallied quickly.
Once the count was done, Liu Yun posted the results in the group chat: "We have twenty-three people confirmed for the dinner. The list of members is below. Please double-check it. If I missed anyone, send me a private message."
Below was a list of member IDs. Xu Su scanned it and saw her name was there.
Sika: "Are we splitting the cost now, or should we wait until after the dinner and split the bill?"
Nanyang: "Our sect’s meetups are always paid for by the boss out of his own pocket. Members don’t need to chip in. Little Xikai, you just have to show up."
The group members were all very supportive, and one by one began sending sticker memes with captions like "Our boss is so generous," "Thanks, boss," "Looking for a sugar daddy," and "Boss, are you hiring leg-hair hangers-on?"
Xu Su joined in on the fun, jumping into the sticker-spamming battle.
She’d been active in the group chat for a long time and had collected a ton of different stickers. She picked out an adorable one of a kitten holding a sign that said, "Thanks, boss," and sent it.
"Still playing on your phone while you eat?" Shen Chen’s fingertips tapped lightly on the dining table. "Xu Su, that’s not a very good habit."
Xu Su muttered an "oh" and shoveled a few mouthfuls of rice into her mouth. But it wasn’t long before Shen Chen’s phone started ringing.
She raised an eyebrow, mimicking his passive-aggressive tone. "Answering your phone while eating? Is that a good habit?"
The hand Shen Chen was using to pick up his phone paused, and he gave her a helpless look.
Xu Su quickly waved her hands. "Never mind, never mind! I was just kidding. I didn’t mean you can’t answer your phone."
While Shen Chen was on the phone, Xu Su glanced at the group chat again.
Sika had made a suggestion, saying that since she was coming all this way, she didn’t want to just have one meal and then go their separate ways. She asked if they could organize some other entertainment for a bit of team building.
The topic had come up before, but nobody seemed very enthusiastic, so it fizzled out.
Now that Sika had brought it up again, only a handful of people responded.
The suggestions were all things like karaoke and drinking.
Liu Yun said that karaoke was already part of the plan—of course they were hitting a KTV after dinner. Besides, karaoke didn’t really count as team building.
So, someone suggested camping or hiking, but most people shot that down.
Sika tagged Xu Su, asking if she had any good ideas.
Xu Su replied that she was easy-going and fine with whatever.
Her zen-like response naturally displeased Sika, who grumbled something in the chat that Xu Su didn’t see.
When Shen Chen finished his call, she locked her phone screen, afraid of getting another lecture, and focused on her food.
After finishing a bowl of the wild ginseng and duck soup that Shen Chen had strongly recommended, Xu Su felt about eighty percent full and decided to stop eating.
No matter how delicious the food, it wasn’t good to overeat. She took her phone and headed to the restroom, taking the opportunity to see what the group had decided on.
The service here was excellent; each private room came with two dedicated servers. A waitress led Xu Su to the restroom, but not wanting to make the woman wait outside for her, Xu Su told her to go on with her duties.
On her way back after washing her hands, Xu Su had a nagging feeling she’d forgotten something. It wasn’t until she was almost at the door of their private room that she realized her hands were empty—her phone was gone.
’I probably left it on the sink,’ Xu Su thought and hurried back. Barely any time had passed, but when she got there, the counter by the sink was completely empty.
Xu Su checked all over—top to bottom—and finally had to accept the fact that someone had taken her phone.
She couldn’t quite believe it. ’Isn’t this supposed to be a high-end place? How could my phone disappear less than ten minutes after I left it?’
Just then, a male server passed by. Xu Su stopped him. "Excuse me, I lost my phone. I left it right on this counter."
She wondered if one of the staff might have put it away for safekeeping.
The server said, "One moment, please," then took the walkie-talkie from his belt and began asking his colleagues about it.
Sure enough, a female server quickly replied over the radio: "A guest found a phone on the restroom counter about five minutes ago. He said that if the owner comes looking for it, they can go to the Lingyun Pavilion private room to claim it from him."
Xu Su breathed a small sigh of relief. The time and place both matched.
She was truly puzzled. ’Why not just give the phone to a server? Why make me come and claim my lost property directly from him?’
’Does he want me to thank him in person?’
’But someone who can afford to eat here isn’t going to be desperate for a ’thank you’...’
Puzzled or not, she had to get her phone back. Xu Su asked, "Which way is the Lingyun Pavilion private room?"
The server bowed slightly and gestured with his arm. "Please, follow me."
The private restaurant wasn’t very large. In less than three minutes, the server leading the way stopped. Xu Su saw the golden plaque on the private room door, engraved with "Lingyun Pavilion."
It was less than ten meters away from her and Shen Chen’s room.
"Please wait a moment," the server said, knocking on the door. It sounded quite lively inside, so no one answered. But the server wasn’t waiting for a guest to respond; he was signaling his colleague, who was stationed in a corner inside.
The door was quickly opened from the inside. The two servers exchanged a few words, then the waitress inside gave Xu Su a small nod before turning and walking toward the main table.
Through the half-open door, Xu Su saw a vaguely familiar man sitting in the host’s seat.
Well, ’vaguely familiar’ meant she’d only seen him once, and they hadn’t even spoken.
