Chapter 141 I Want to Protect My Wife
Chapter 141 I Want to Protect My Wife
Bai Si'an struggled, but he was injured and no match for Bai Rongbei's strength. Bai Rongbei held him tightly and dragged him away from the bedside.
Li Jianguo lay paralyzed on the bed, covering his nose, blood flowing from between his fingers.
Wang Xiuying rushed over: "Jianguo! Are you alright? Oh dear, you're bleeding!"
Bai Si'an was still struggling, her eyes fixed on Li Jianguo: "You bastard! You almost killed her! You almost killed her, do you even know that?!"
Bai Rongbei forcefully dragged him outside: "That's enough! If you hit me again, something serious will really happen!"
Several doctors and nurses heard the commotion and ran over, only to be stunned by the scene.
Bai Rongbei dragged Bai Si'an out of the ward and pinned him against the corridor wall: "Calm down!"
Bai Si'an was panting heavily, his chest heaving violently, and his eyes were frighteningly red.
"Brother..." His voice was hoarse and barely audible, "She did it to save me... She didn't have to go in..."
Bai Rongbei looked at him, loosening his grip slightly but not letting go: "I know. But what problem will hitting him solve? Will killing him wake Lin Weiwei up?"
Bai Si'an stopped talking and just started panting.
The doctor came over to treat Li Jianguo's nose. Wang Xiuying was crying beside him, saying that she must report to her superiors that Bai Si'an had beaten the injured man.
Bai Rongbei turned to look at her, his eyes icy cold.
Wang Xiuying shuddered under his gaze and lowered her voice.
Bai Rongbei released Bai Si'an and pulled him back. This time, Bai Si'an didn't struggle and let him pull him back to Lin Weiwei's ward.
Su Wanwan stood at the door, her face pale, clearly having heard the commotion.
Bai Si'an walked back to the chair, sat down, and took Lin Weiwei's hand again. His hand was still trembling.
Bai Rongbei said to Su Wanwan, "Keep an eye on him. I'll go take care of things."
Su Wanwan nodded.
Bai Rongbei left, and the ward fell silent again.
Bai Si'an lowered his head, looking at Lin Weiwei's hand. He held it tightly, as if she would disappear if he let go.
Su Wanwan picked up the towel from the ground, washed it again, and handed it to him: "Wipe your hands clean, they're covered in blood."
Bai Si'an looked down at his hands; his knuckles were scraped and there was some blood. It must have been from when he was hitting Li Jianguo.
He took the towel, wiped himself haphazardly a couple of times, tossed it aside, and then took Lin Weiwei's hand.
Around 10 p.m., the nurse came to re-inject Bai Si'an's IV. This time he didn't resist, extending his left hand while his eyes remained fixed on Lin Weiwei.
After the nurse inserted the needle and adjusted the drip rate, she whispered to Su Wanwan, "You should rest for a while too; you can't keep going like this."
Su Wanwan shook her head: "I'll wait a bit."
The nurse sighed and left.
It was late at night, and half of the lights in the corridor were off.
Bai Si'an remained in the same posture, holding Lin Weiwei's hand, his back ramrod straight. The medicine dripped down, drop by drop.
Su Wanwan sat beside her, her eyelids growing heavier and heavier. She had been filled with fear and anxiety all day and hadn't eaten much; now she was feeling sleepy.
She kept nodding her head, almost falling over. She quickly sat up straight and rubbed her face.
Bai Rongbei returned at some point and stood at the door.
He walked in, glanced at Bai Si'an, and said to Su Wanwan, "Come out."
Su Wanwan stood up and followed him out of the ward.
The corridor was empty except for the nurse on duty who was dozing behind a table in the distance.
Bai Rongbei sat down on a bench in the corridor and patted the spot next to him.
Su Wanwan went over and sat down.
"Are you hungry?" Bai Rongbei asked.
Su Wanwan shook her head, then nodded: "A little."
Bai Rongbei took out an oil paper package from his military uniform pocket, opened it, and inside were two still-warm roasted potatoes.
"It's leftovers from the cafeteria last night, I heated it up." He handed the larger one to Su Wanwan.
Su Wanwan took it; the potato was roasted until soft, with a slightly charred skin. She broke it open, and steam escaped, the aroma filling her nostrils.
She ate in small bites, and her stomach felt a little warmer.
Bai Rongbei also ate one himself, and ate it very quickly, finishing it in just a few bites.
After finishing his meal, he crumpled the oil paper into a ball and stuffed it back into his pocket.
"How is Bai Si'an?" he asked.
"Still the same, not saying a word, not moving," Su Wanwan said softly. "He won't listen to my urging to eat something."
Bai Rongbei remained silent for a while.
"Let him keep watch," he said. "He won't be able to live with himself if he doesn't."
Su Wanwan nodded.
The two sat for a while longer, but Su Wanwan was so sleepy that her head kept nodding.
Bai Rongbei glanced at her, reached out and pulled her close, letting her lean on his shoulder.
"Take a nap," he said.
Su Wanwan was a little embarrassed at first, but she was so sleepy that her eyelids closed after only a few seconds of leaning against him.
Bai Rongbei sat upright, making her more comfortable. He stared at the peeling plaster on the opposite wall, lost in thought.
The corridor was quiet, and you could hear the wind blowing across the Gobi Desert in the distance.
About an hour later, Su Wanwan stirred and woke up.
She found herself leaning on Bai Rongbei's shoulder, with his military jacket covering her.
"Awake?" Bai Rongbei asked, his voice low.
"Hmm..." Su Wanwan sat up straight and handed his coat back to him. "You haven't slept at all?"
"Not sleepy."
Su Wanwan glanced at the hospital room door: "Is Bai Si'an still inside?"
"exist."
She stood up and stretched her stiff neck: "I'll go in and take a look."
Pushing open the ward door, Bai Si'an was still in the same position. The IV drip was almost finished, but he seemed unaware.
Su Wanwan walked over and pressed the call bell by the bedside.
The nurse came in quickly and changed the IV fluid.
"Technician Bai, you really need to lie down for a while," the nurse whispered, "You have a rib injury; you can't sit like this."
Bai Si'an did not respond.
The nurse had no choice but to change the IV fluid and leave.
Su Wanwan sat down again in the chair. She looked at Lin Weiwei and silently said in her heart: Weiwei, please wake up. If you don't wake up, Bai Si'an will collapse too.
In the latter half of the night, Bai Si'an finally couldn't hold on any longer and fell asleep by the bedside. His hand was still tightly holding Lin Weiwei's hand.
Su Wanwan was also sleepy, but she dared not sleep, afraid that if Lin Weiwei woke up, no one would know.
As dawn approached, Bai Rongbei entered, carrying two bowls of porridge.
"The cafeteria just cooked this." He placed a bowl on the bedside table. "You eat this; give this bowl to Si'an."
Su Wanwan nodded, picked up the bowl, and sipped the porridge. The millet porridge was thick and warming.
Bai Rongbei glanced at Bai Si'an, who was sleeping face down, but didn't wake him. He placed another bowl of porridge on the bedside table and turned to leave.
As the sun gradually rose outside the window, the golden-red light slowly crept into the ward. The sunrise in the Gobi Desert comes early.
Sunlight shone on Lin Weiwei's face, and her eyelashes fluttered.
