Chapter 39 Urgency
Chapter 39 Urgency
Frodo looked at the dark, long, narrow road and felt that the path Gollum had given him was not a good choice.
After crossing the Death Swamp, he and Sam were exhausted.
His inner retreat, in particular, made him really want to turn around and leave at that moment.
Even though he knew that the Rings were fueling his inner desires, as time went on and he drew closer to Sauron...
He could no longer tell whether the Ring was fueling his desires or whether it was his own idea.
"Watch out!" Gollum pounced from behind and pinned Frodo down.
Sam, thinking Gollum was trying to steal the One Ring, was about to draw his sword when he heard Gollum point below and say, "Watch out, hide! They're coming out!"
Sam instinctively peered over and saw a large army of orcs carrying torches slowly and methodically moving forward on the wooden bridge below.
The torches stretched from the fortress gate to the far end of the valley, forming a flowing golden river.
Sam was breathless and at a loss for what to do at this scene!
Frodo turned deathly pale!
……
Rohan, Helm's Deep.
The great battle had ended several days ago, but they had not returned to the capital.
Still staying here!
Because Saruman's warg riders often appeared and disappeared in the vicinity, relying on his ravens for aerial reconnaissance.
They always had more troops in certain areas than the Orcs, which meant that whenever the Orcs tried to break out and intercept the Orc army advancing towards Gondor, they were always driven back.
King Théoden stood on the city wall, his face filled with sorrow.
There isn't enough food left. If we don't break out soon, everyone will starve to death here.
None of the teams sent out to gather support have returned!
Haldir, clutching the wound on his right shoulder, approached it and said, "I just received news! Reinforcements from the north are on their way! King Elrond will be arriving soon too!"
He was seriously injured in that battle.
The grenade that Tulag gave him played a decisive role at a crucial moment.
Otherwise, all 200 elf reinforcements he brought would perish here.
"How much longer?"
Haldir shook his head, indicating that he didn't know either!
King Théoden's newly risen hope instantly sank to the bottom.
Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli had already broken out several days earlier with the token he had given them.
Head north to gather the Rohan cavalry scattered and stationed on the border.
But there's still no sign of them!
Gandalf, leaning on his staff, walked up the city wall and came to the two of them.
Seeing their worried expressions, he reassured them, "Don't worry! Tulag will definitely bring back reinforcements!"
Théoden nodded: "I wonder how Gondor is doing!"
"With Boromir there, Gondor can hold out!" Gandalf said reassuringly, but a hint of worry flashed in his eyes.
However, his biggest concern was for Frodo and Sam, who were heading towards Mount Doom.
Meanwhile, at this time, Gondor!
With a large army gathered, Polomir, upon his return, immediately urged his father to summon the entire nation's army to provide support.
At the same time, they frantically reinforced the entire Minas Tirith, even the Anduin River across the river and the old Gondor ruins next to it.
In these days, the orcs have launched more than ten attacks.
The previous attacks were all probing attacks by hundreds of orcs!
But their numbers kept increasing, with the most recent attack involving over 1000 orcs.
They crossed the river quietly at night and launched a direct attack when the defenders were off guard.
Fortunately, the defensive fortifications were well-constructed; otherwise, the passage might have been opened up.
His brother Faramir was even personally in command there!
Boromir looked at the military report on repelling the orc attack once again, rubbed his temples, and walked back to the palace, looking at his father, Denethor II, who sat beside the throne.
"Faramir has just repelled another orcish attack! But the pressure is mounting; Saruman's army is advancing from the west! They'll launch an attack from our north!" He handed the report to his father: "We need to light the beacon towers!"
Denethor II, however, laughed and said, "My child! You have no idea what the situation is like now. Saruman's immense power has completely taken control of Rohan. Théoden and the others are barely able to protect themselves! They won't come to our aid. Lighting the beacon towers is no longer important! We can only rely on ourselves."
Boromir looked at his father with a headache. After he returned, his father had been telling him the same thing, advising him to take things as they come.
This capitulationist approach greatly angered him.
"Thulag has already gone north to gather a coalition of the three races to support us, and if nothing unexpected happens, Rohan will also send reinforcements! We still have a choice, so we'd better light the beacon towers now!" Boromir didn't want to offer any more advice.
But no sooner had he finished speaking than Denesor II's face contorted with rage, and he roared, "I am the Regent of Gondor! I have the authority to light the beacon towers! You are nothing! You've only spent a few days with that white-robed charlatan wizard and you've been brainwashed like this. You think you can defeat Sauron? Have you even seen Sauron?"
As he spoke, he stood up, waving his hands like a madman: "I've seen that scene in Saruman's crystal ball! I've seen far more and farther than you and that fraudulent wizard!"
After saying that, he shouted outside, "Guards! Throw him out!"
The door swung open with a bang, and a blast of cold air rushed in.
Several guards rushed in and stood on either side of Polomir, gesturing for him to leave.
Boromir was so angry his hands trembled, and he wanted to draw his sword. He cut down several guards on the spot, but he knew that was not their intention.
She could only glare angrily at her father before turning and leaving!
In Fangorn Forest!
Merry and Pippin sat on the canopy of the Ents, watching them advance toward Isengard.
The smugness in their eyes was impossible to hide; if the treants saw the miserable state beside Isengrim, they would be furious.
What they didn't know was that inside the entire fortress at that moment...
Except for the orcs who remained to manufacture weapons, all the orcs left.
Even Saruman recently left Isengard!
At this moment, Saruman was riding a black horse with blood-red eyes, following behind the last wave of orcs to provide cover.
He held a staff in one hand and supported a crystal ball with the other.
His army has now successfully passed through most of the passes of Luohan and is gathering in Black Barbarian Valley.
It's very close to Helm's Deep!
