Chapter 36 Things Are Different Now
Chapter 36 Things Are Different Now
Outside the police cordon, a blond, blue-eyed reporter methodically explained the current situation to the camera.
"We have an urgent news briefing: Arkham Asylum on Naihe Island was attacked around 1 a.m. last night. It is now 1:25 a.m."
"According to nearby residents, there have been multiple explosions in Arkham, suggesting that someone may have deliberately set it on fire. Compared to the previous Arkham bombing, this one was much bigger, and the intention was likely to destroy Arkham."
"As you can see, behind me is Arkham Asylum, and this desolate ruin is what Arkham looks like now..."
The camera panned from the reporter to the background, where GCPD officers were standing by the cordon maintaining order. A man in a brown trench coat strode into the frame, pulled back the cordon, and was about to go inside.
"Criminal scene, unauthorized personnel are not allowed to enter!"
Gordon pulled out his police ID from his chest pocket as he walked, unfolded the inner pages of the ID, and held it up to the camera.
"I am James Gordon, who was in charge of the Arkham bombing. I suspect that this bombing is closely related to the previous one."
The officer lowered his hand; even with the chief's orders, he couldn't stop Gordon under these circumstances and had no choice but to let him in.
Gordon smiled at the officer; he knew this was going to happen, which is why he deliberately tried to rush in when the camera turned to him.
Since Chief Detective Luo didn't inform him about the latest bombing in Arkham, it meant he didn't intend for him to continue handling the case. In a worse situation, the original case might even be taken away from him and Brock and handed over to the detective who came today.
He wouldn't let that happen, and those people under Director Luo's orders didn't dare enter a building that could collapse at any moment.
Even though the explosions had stopped for a while, they were still afraid that some bomb might still have missed and take their lives.
Gordon rushed inside, but not into the building; instead, he ran towards Arkham on the other side of the building.
He noticed someone leaving from the back of the building. He didn't know who it was, but it seemed familiar, as if he had seen it somewhere before.
Just like before, when he arrived, all that remained were unconscious wounded people.
Above the corner of the building, Zheng Enzheng stood on the platform recessed by the second-floor window, watching Gordon search carefully from all angles, but he couldn't find any trace of anyone.
He couldn't help but wonder, "Strange, could this person possibly fly?"
Sorry, I really do.
Zheng En silently replied in his heart. Only after Gordon left with the injured did he return home with the bamboo dragonfly on his head.
He previously didn't use the bamboo dragonfly for two main reasons: first, he wasn't familiar with the roads in Gotham and couldn't recognize the terrain from the air; second, if he were discovered, he would easily be shot and become a live target.
Now, Batman, the mentor, has greatly improved and is displaying his power in Arkham, making it no problem for him to cosplay as a living map.
It was dark, and few people looked up, let alone recognized any human figures floating in the air.
With both problems resolved, Zheng En was able to return home quickly and easily.
He didn't even use the door; he opened the window and climbed into the bedroom from the outside. Although it wasn't forbidden to use the balcony, that direction faced the street, and there was no guarantee that some homeless person wouldn't see him. It was safer to use the bedroom.
When Zheng En got home, the first thing she did was open the panel to calculate her rewards.
[Quest: Arkham Night]
[A good start. For an ordinary person who has never experienced the life of a vigilante, you have done very well.]
Whether out of concern for certain individuals or a desire to add weight to the side of fairness and justice, you did what you could.
That night, some people couldn't eat or sleep properly;
That night, some people woke up from nightmares;
That night, at least one old man was able to meet the person he was waiting for.
[Mission Rewards: $10,000 USD, 20 Simulation Points, Basic Gun Skill, Mastery of Melee Combat]
[Quest: The Burning Arkham]
You don't know who the person you saved is, their identity, or what kind of person they are.
They may be innocent victims, or they may be criminals driven by profit.
But in any case, doing good deeds is right most of the time; at least you can have a clear conscience.
[Mission Rewards: US$10,000, 20 Simulation Points, Introduction to Disguise and Performance Arts, Basic Skills in Reconnaissance and Counter-Reconnaissance]
[Feature: Shop (Unlocked)]
Zheng En opened the store and was immediately shocked by the prices.
Similar to the gacha pool, the shop section in the panel is also divided into three levels: gray, white, and purple. Gray is fine, probably because it's so useless that it only costs one simulation point to purchase, but white costs ten points, and purple costs fifty points.
LOL, no wonder there's a gacha pool.
Zheng En was almost laughing at himself. If there had only been the system shop from the beginning, he probably would have already failed miserably.
He looked at the long row of various props in the store and decisively chose to avoid seeing them and simply closed the door.
Then I opened the card pool.
There are no gamblers who lose every day, and no children who cry every night.
He figured his luck was pretty good, and his finger hovered over the edge of the card pool.
...Forget it, what if he really needs a specific item urgently one day and doesn't have any simulation points? He'll be in big trouble then.
With that thought in mind, Zheng En closed the control panel and went to sleep.
What followed unfolded almost exactly as he had predicted. Just days after the massive explosion at Arkham, it caused quite a stir in Gotham City.
An explosion at a mental hospital isn't really a big deal. Gotham doesn't have many bombings, but they do happen. Since no one died at Arkham, it doesn't receive much attention.
However, this matter is intricately linked to past missing persons cases and involves Falcone, the infamous "Roman," the hidden power behind Gotham and the leader of numerous gangs.
Generally speaking, the Arkham bombing should be glossed over, just like every other case that might involve the Falcone family in the past, and quietly buried in the corner of the archives before it was known to the public.
There will be no media coverage, and no detectives will investigate.
But it's different now.
"Hey guys, I'm Vicky Will, and I'm in charge of covering the Arkham bombing."
Jung Eun watched the news report on TV; the reporter was a blonde, blue-eyed woman.
He remembered that she was the reporter who had stormed into Arkham Asylum that night to provide live coverage. The spotlight shone on her, making her blonde hair gleam.
"In the past few days, the investigation into the secondary bombing of Arkham has made initial progress. It is understood that this incident is not only linked to the previous missing persons case, but the GCPD has also found evidence of Carmine Falcone's involvement."
