Vida sensed a terrifying darkness emanating from him and frowned.
That was the dark side he sensed as soon as he entered, the negative force that shrouded the Frost family.
Everything around them was shrouded in darkness, so dark that they couldn't see their own hands in front of their faces. The shadows seemed to come alive, tightly wrapping around their bodies and dragging them downwards.
A feeling of falling enveloped the three of them, as if they had suddenly stepped into thin air in their sleep, and they felt themselves falling continuously downwards.
Of the trio, the most learned mage, Vida, immediately reminded them:
"Watch out, we're falling into another dimension!"
Following his memory, he made spellcasting gestures with his fingers, about to cast a spell he wasn't very familiar with.
Its name is "Plane Exile," which can expel a target from the current plane, provided that the target is not too strong or does not resist.
Combined with another spell, "Spatial Anchor," it can help them return to Itnity from the outer plane.
"It's too late to cast the spell now!"
A roar echoed from the darkness, tearing through the shadows and hurtling straight at the mage.
Vida's expression changed drastically. The dragon's roar had a silencing effect, which interrupted his spellcasting and forced the "planar banishment" process to a halt.
It's too late to cast "Plane Exile" again.
From the darkness, two terrifyingly large dragons appeared.
They are covered in scarlet scales, from which dense red tentacles emerge from. Their bodies and limbs have degenerated for unknown reasons, becoming short and small, just like their wings.
Conversely, there are their bodies.
Unlike most dragons, these two dragons had long, pea-like bodies, appearing much more slender compared to their relatives.
Their tails forked into two long whip-like blades, and Vida had no doubt that if he were hit by one, he would be torn in two.
"A dragon? What kind of dragon is this?"
Ivan was on high alert; he desperately needed information about the two behemoths before him.
Neither the most learned mage in the team nor the most knowledgeable sorcerer knew the types of these two dragons.
This was the first time they had ever seen a dragon like this, with such a strange appearance and such a repulsive aura, as if it were a man-made desecration of life.
"Blasphemy? I see, these must be two dragons that have been artificially modified."
Vader stared at the two blasphemous creations, feeling a sense of disgust arising from the element of light, as if facing a great enemy of all life.
"These are my retinue; you may also call them Styx Dragons."
Mordi and Elena reappear, the filthy, cursed river flowing beneath their feet and toward the distant horizon.
Finn looked at the raging river, his instincts urging him to get away as soon as possible.
His lips moved, uttering a single word:
"The River Styx."
"Is there any way to get out of here?" Ivan asked, his palms sweating, trying to remain calm.
"No, even if I cast Plane Exile again, they will interrupt me." Vida shook his head, his gaze towards Styx filled with curiosity.
During their conversation, the River Styx changed course, and the waves lifted the two of them, bringing them to their presence.
"A mage, a sorcerer, and a magic swordsman, all at the level of a fifth-grade seal."
The Eye of the Soul slightly opened and glanced at the projection of Vader and the other two on the ethereal plane.
The concealment they set up on the etheric layer could not block Modi's vision at all, and he could easily see through his true form.
The three projections each had five glowing marks on them, revealing their respective levels.
Vida and Finn frowned slightly, but Ivan's expression changed the most.
He never expected that after hiding it for so long, someone would see through it at a glance.
So he stopped pretending, drew his second sword, and questioned:
"Lord of Winter, you've colluded with demons from another dimension and dragged us here. What exactly are you trying to do?"
"As a weak and pitiful lord, isn't it normal for me to recruit more fierce-looking soldiers to protect myself?"
Modi maintained his smile, and his second sentence took them completely by surprise.
"You are all exceptional talents. As the Lord of Winter and the chief representative of the New White River Town Residents' Committee, I extend an invitation to you: 'Are you interested in joining us to build New White River Town, and incidentally, to overthrow the tyrannical Grand Duke Stano and the other nobles?'"
This person is insane.
This was the first thought that popped into Ivan's mind.
They were just drawing their swords against them a moment ago, how come they're recruiting them in the blink of an eye?
"Ha, you think I'd believe your nonsense?" Ivan sneered. "Not only me, but neither would my companions."
He turned to look at the other two, only to see that Finn seemed interested, and Vida looked like he was seriously considering it.
"You...you don't really want to agree to him, do you?" His expression froze on his face.
A hint of embarrassment flashed across Finn's face. He coughed twice and said, "I was just communicating with my sect leader. I didn't have any such intentions."
"And what about you, Vida?" Ivan asked, looking at the other person.
Unlike Finn, the mage did not immediately deny it; his expression gradually became serious.
The other two tensed up and gripped their weapons tighter.
Ivan, in particular, never imagined that his old comrade would hesitate for so long on this issue.
Not far away, Modi stood with his arms crossed, a hint of anticipation flashing in his eyes.
Elena looked at him strangely and nudged his waist. "Could it be that the mage really will backstab you?"
"I can't guarantee it would be anyone else, but if it's him, it's quite possible."
Vidar the sorcerer, a legendary figure born into a commoner family.
Barring unforeseen circumstances, he will break with his companions in the future and, after the Dragon Plague, lead the refugees scattered throughout the North in a rebellion, defeating the Grand Duke and the various lords.
But that's just one possibility for the future; Modi is more focused on his current choices.
Under the tense gaze of his two companions, Vida raised his head and asked:
"Ivan, Fane, do you know what's different about New White River Town compared to other towns?"
Ivan thought back for a moment.
"The townspeople here are no different from those in other places; they are just as rude and short-sighted, but there is one difference."
That is, they are very united, highly loyal to their lord, and have even formed a strange organization called the Residents' Committee.
"If it weren't for these troublesome residents from the neighborhood committee, we wouldn't have been discovered so easily." Finn's face was gloomy.
"I see. It seems you and I are ultimately different."
Vida chuckled softly, took out a necklace, and gently rubbed it.
This necklace is made of copper and looks quite old, with some parts rusted. Even if you sold it, it wouldn't be worth much.
"The lives of commoners are no more than this necklace to those high-ranking nobles, worthless."
Ivan had a bad feeling. He was about to interrupt when a sense of fear crept into his heart.
It was as if he would lose his life the next second if he did that.
He glanced to the other side out of the corner of his eye and met Modi's gaze.
"We've been to so many territories, and with the exception of a few, the civilians in most areas are living in very poor conditions."
Despite being the ones who cultivated the crops, they had to supply the majority to the lords, leaving themselves only a negligible amount. In some places, this even reached the appalling level of nine out of ten taxes.
And this is just one type of tax. In order to amass wealth, lords often promulgate many more strange and absurd taxes.
Even when their daughters got married, they had to pay a "virginity tax," offering their virginity to the local lord.
Vida muttered to himself as shadows gradually gathered and surrounded him.
"But Xinbaihe Town is different. The residents here look much healthier than in other places, and they rarely get sick. Do you know why?"
"Why?" Finn frowned. "Does the Lord of Winter provide them with blessings regularly? That's how the church cures illnesses, so he definitely has that ability too."
Upon hearing this answer, both Mordi and Vida laughed.
"It's not as complicated as you make it out to be," Vida shook his head and chuckled. "It's just that they get to eat their fill every day, and they eat better than ordinary people in other places, that's all."
When you're well-fed, your body is naturally healthier, and your resistance to disease is naturally stronger.
Unless one encounters a curse or a serious illness, what need is there for blessings?
He had just arrived and, after investigating and learning of this fact, also felt somewhat surprised.
After all, very few lords would go to such lengths for the common people.
Ivan and Finn were speechless for a moment; being of noble birth, they had never considered this possibility.
They never considered that not all commoners in this world can get enough to eat, nor that not all lords are as generous as Mordi.
"How did he do that? This town has only just been established. Even if we start farming immediately, it's impossible for it to produce food so quickly."
In response to Ivan's question, Mordy casually replied:
"With magic and a little personal funding, I spent a small amount of money to buy grain from nearby lords so that my people could have enough to eat."
Capitalists will sell the ropes that hang them, and lords will dig up their own foundations because of his extravagant spending.
Ivan was speechless again; it was the first time he had ever seen a lord go to such lengths.
Since ancient times, it has always been the people who provide food to the lord. How can there be any logic in the lord distributing food to the people?
Moreover, in their view, these rude and unruly commoners were not worthy of such treatment from their noble lord.
This is just one of the measures implemented by Modi.
What exactly does he want to do?
As a seasoned noble warrior, Ivan quickly realized that there seemed to be some profound purpose behind these measures.
He was uneasy about this and was now focused on getting the news out.
"Enough, Vida. I don't want to hear any more of this nonsense. I just want to know, are you still on our side?"
Vida looked up at him, then took out a medal.
It was awarded to him by Grand Duke Stano as a reward for helping the Grand Duke quell a group of rebels.
"I've had enough of the aristocracy's arrogant attitude and their disdainful looks."
With a slight press of the fingers, several cracks appeared on the medal with a soft sound.
"This is not necessary."
The shadows gathered around him, transforming into a jet-black cloak that draped over his body.
Cheers faintly echoed from the dark side, as if celebrating his fall.
Negative elements flooded into his body like a tidal wave, corrupting and distorting his power.
"I see another possibility here, and I want to give it a try."
Having said that, he was completely plunged into the darkness that shrouded the death row.
Ivan's face turned pale, and he clenched his teeth, unable to believe that his comrade-in-arms, who had been with him for so many years, would betray him simply because of differences in ideology.
Worse still, without the mage, they may have lost their way out.
"Ivan, I have another idea."
After a moment of hesitation, Fein's expression hardened.
"I can contact my lord and have him take us away. Once we're gone, you must immediately inform Grand Duke Stano and unite with other lords to wipe out this place."
"We can't let anyone escape here!"
