Chapter 55 Residents of the Apartment
Chapter 55 Residents of the Apartment
After waiting for about ten minutes, the waiter brought the dishes over.
Huang Mengjie started wolfing down the food as soon as she saw it, completely lacking the gentlemanly manners one would expect when eating Western food.
Sun Rui didn't eat; he wasn't hungry.
The owner saw this and came over, clearly wanting to ask if there was something wrong with their food.
"Let's figure out the situation first, then you can eat whatever you want," Sun Rui said.
Huang Mengjie looked up at Sun Rui and nodded. Her mouth was full of food. She picked up the water glass next to her and took a big gulp before swallowing the food.
"Okay, what questions do you want to ask?"
"The specific details of the apartment, the owner, and the tenants," Sun Rui said.
Huang Mengjie started talking to the boss.
The boss spoke very quickly, so Sun Rui put his phone aside to record.
"He said that the original owner of this apartment was not the current person, but his older brother. After the original owner passed away, his younger brother took over. The current owner is called Cassius Gray."
"And his brother actually has a daughter, but I don't know why the inheritance ended up in Cassius's hands."
"Only the residents on the first floor are left in the apartment now; they are only continuing to live here out of necessity."
Huang Mengjie continued translating.
The restaurant owner's face also began to show signs of fear.
"He said that one night he saw a woman in a white dress hanging from the window of his apartment, with blood dripping from her feet to the ground, but when he tried to see her clearly again, she was gone."
"He also heard from former tenants that if they heard footsteps in the hallway at night, they should never go out to check, or something bad would happen."
As the boss spoke, Huang Mengjie translated simultaneously.
"Some people didn't believe the rumor, so they went out in the middle of the night following the footsteps. The next day they talked about it with others. Then, the second night, they mysteriously disappeared and never appeared again. That's the rumor we heard before."
As the boss continued to talk, Huang Mengjie began to frown.
"What's wrong?" Sun Rui asked.
"He said that the person who went missing in the apartment was fake, because he had checked the surveillance footage and it had been broken for a long time."
"What about the rumors the police station mentioned earlier?" Sun Rui asked.
Huang Mengjie relayed the problem to her boss.
"Cassius is a complete miser. He wouldn't allow rumors of his apartment being haunted. He bribed the police and then fabricated the story as a disappearance," the boss whispered in Huang Mengjie's ear.
Then she translated what she said and relayed it to Sun Rui.
Sun Rui thought about it for a moment, which meant that the apartment was indeed haunted, and the only remaining tenants were the few people on the first floor. Of course, Sun Rui wasn't sure if there were any other people on the first floor, since he had only seen three people, and some doors hadn't been opened.
"Looks like I'll have to wait until tonight; all the rumors about vengeful ghosts happen at night," Sun Rui thought.
"Help me ask him roughly what time he noticed the anomaly last night, and how many of the hotel guests he knows, and write down each person's information for me in Chinese." Sun Rui took out a notebook from his pocket and handed it to Huang Mengjie.
"Okay." Huang Mengjie took the notebook and began to take notes.
But the boss did not answer Huang Mengjie's question at this moment.
Sun Rui knew the problem at a glance.
He took out ten $100 bills from his pocket and handed them to Huang Mengjie.
"Tell him to give us the information; these are his," Sun Rui gestured.
Huang Mengjie was quite surprised: "This information could easily be obtained from other people. Isn't this a waste?"
"Don't forget that you're just an employee of mine; I don't need you to make decisions," Sun Rui said.
Huang Mengjie had no choice but to relay her words to the boss.
The boss's expression changed instantly, and he quickly nodded in agreement.
Huang Mengjie began to write the information down on paper.
In less than five minutes, the paper was filled with information about everyone in the apartment.
"He said there are five tenants in the apartment, not including Cassius." Huang Mengjie handed the notebook to Sun Rui.
Sun Rui examined it carefully.
"Daphne Kent, the female tenant on the first floor, is a madwoman. Some say she is possessed by an evil spirit. She has lived here for a long time and used to be a normal person."
"Jeremy Perry, a male tenant, blond and wearing glasses, is interning at a financial company and has no choice but to live in the gray brick apartment because the rent is cheaper here."
"Finn Wilder, a male tenant, is an alcoholic. His lease hasn't expired yet, so he's still here. He often comes to the restaurant to buy alcohol."
"..."
Sun Rui quickly scanned all the information and matched the information of three people with what he had seen.
The remaining two people appear to be a couple; they work during the day and are generally not in the apartment.
The anomaly in the apartment occurred at midnight.
Then there's Cassius, who slept in the small lounge behind the front desk so as not to take up a room.
Sun Rui shook his head; this person was really stingy.
Another one is Cassius's niece, Arya Grey, his brother's daughter. She doesn't live in the apartment, apparently because the two have broken up.
"Is it because they didn't win the inheritance?" Sun Rui thought subconsciously, after all, this is the thinking of a normal person.
The apartment layout is much clearer now; it's time to go back to the apartment.
Sun Rui ate a couple of bites of the food here, not really having much of an appetite, but still needed to prepare for the evening.
Huang Mengjie ordered two dishes, so she must have been really hungry.
The two quickly finished their meal and went to the apartment.
When Cassius saw that Sun Rui had brought a woman with him, he quickly stepped forward and said, "There is an extra charge if two people stay in one room in the apartment."
Huang Mengjie translated what was said. Her face was a little red, but it was not clear because of the dust.
"How much?" Sun Rui asked.
"The extra person will cost $400," the boss said, holding up four fingers.
Sun Rui nodded, he understood what he meant, and after handing the money to Cassius, he went upstairs without any trouble.
Upon arriving on the fourth floor, Sun Rui did not sense anything unusual. Everything was arranged normally. Similar to the first floor, there were ten rooms distributed around the corridor, and each room was locked.
Apart from door 404, many doors were covered in dust, as if they hadn't been cleaned in a long time.
However, when Sun Rui and his group passed by the second and third floors, they found that the floors had been cleaned.
No one lives on the second and third floors; either Cassius cleans them or they hire cleaners. But no one cleans the fourth floor, except for room 404.
Sun Rui didn't show much abnormality and went straight into room 402, with Huang Mengjie following behind him.
The room was small, with only a bedroom and a table. There was no TV or anything like that. The bathroom was to the left of the entrance, and there was a light dust on the floor, as if no one had lived there for a long time.
"Go to the boss and get a set of bedding. You'll sleep on the floor tonight," Sun Rui said.
"Okay." Huang Mengjie lowered her head and nodded gently.
After sending Huang Mengjie away, Sun Rui began to check the rooms on the fourth floor.
Because he was going to stay in room 404 that night, staying in room 402 was just a euphemism.
Sun Rui used the ghost haze to easily open the door to room 404.
A strong smell of blood, mixed with a foul stench, hit me, as if something was rotting.
"How could there be so many animal carcasses?" Sun Rui frowned. On the floor of room 404 in front of him, there were at least a dozen dead cats or dogs, and these animals were quite dirty, probably stray animals from the neighborhood.
The strangest thing is that the room did not emit any smell when it was not opened.
