Chapter 465 What was history really like?
The Airbus One carrying the US president suddenly lost all external signals during the flight. Although the Pentagon and the White House did not know what had happened, it was reported that Tony Stark was also on board, so officials at all levels of the White House were not particularly worried.
It's no big deal. Can't the Avengers handle it?
So while they were checking satellites to see what was happening, they also sent a message to the Avengers to ask what had happened—however, at this point they still didn't understand what was going on with the American Avengers and the Avengers battle, because the message hadn't reached that level yet.
Meanwhile, journalists in Pittsburgh were ecstatic, ready to question the local government and write articles that would make the White House a laughingstock for a whole year.
For President Ellis, the reporters weren't his biggest concern. As Air Force One gradually descended, he couldn't help but worry about his safety. Although Tony Stark appeared very relaxed and confident, it couldn't completely dispel the president's inner panic.
For some reason, he felt uneasy, as if something bad was about to happen.
All communication inside the Airbus One was completely cut off, and even Tony Stark probably had no way to contact the outside world. He also fell silent for some time.
"It looks like we're almost there, Mr. President."
Tony sensed the change in the plane's altitude, smiled, and stood up: "Excuse me, I need to use the restroom. The Iron Man suit will protect your safety, Mr. President."
As Tony spoke, he stood up. President Ellis, in his nervousness, suddenly noticed something amiss.
Wait, if Tony Stark left the armor with me, wouldn't he be completely unprotected?
Upon realizing this, President Ellis quickly stood up, then hesitated before sitting down again.
He wasn't sure what would happen, but what if, what if Tony Stark was truly caught off guard and was assassinated by AIM personnel controlling the unit while he was in the bathroom? Wouldn't he be finished?
Tony casually went into the bathroom to release some of his tension. Just as he finished pulling up his pants and fastening his belt, he first heard a knock on the door, followed by President Eris's voice: "Sorry, Stark, I was a little nervous too..."
"Yes, Mr. President, I'll be right there."
Tony smiled as he left the plane's lavatory. Looking around, he realized Ellis was no longer under the protection of his new, completely different armor. He nodded knowingly to the president and turned to leave. At the same time, President Ellis, having mustered his courage, approached the lavatory and stared at Tony as he emerged.
Almost simultaneously, President Ellis saw another version of himself emerge from behind Tony. This second version held a gun, pointed it at Tony Stark from behind, and gave a sinister smile before pulling the trigger.
In some unknown place, Nimrod watched all of this. His calculations were flawless; with just a little manipulation, he could steer history in the right direction. These foolish humans, having come to understand fate, would try to change it, but this would only trap them in an unchangeable destiny.
For example, to prevent Nimrod from emerging in this timeline, Tony Stark would acquire Trascux Industries, and this act itself would be entirely new information. Only if Nimrod promptly relays this information to Mystique would Mystique believe that Tony Stark is the most important figure, and that he would develop new Sentinels for the slaughter of mutants.
Therefore, Mystique will use her abilities and Nimrod's guidance to infiltrate Avengers Tower and investigate the Avengers' ongoing plans. She will easily discover the problems between AIM and Tony Stark and shift all focus to how to assassinate Tony Stark.
So, history returned to its original course at this moment: Tony Stark and President Matthew Ellis died in the conspiracy within AIM, and then Nimrod would guarantee that even if AIM collapsed and the Vice President was captured, the new government would still discover that Mystique had assassinated the President and Tony Stark, and would rearrange the acquisition of Trasc Industries, thus putting everything back on track.
All of this happened in the blink of an eye. A bright spark flashed across Tony's body, and then a brand new, all-different armor appeared, blocking the bullet. Tony quickly turned around, pinned Mystique, who was disguised as President Ellis, to the ground, and then a brand new, all-different armor appeared on his body.
"No one's ever said a person can only wear one suit of armor, ma'am." Tony, who had pinned Mystique to the ground, smiled. "How's that? Surprised?"
Mystique wasn't the only one surprised; Nimrod was too. Nimrod reacted quickly, and then President Ellis felt a strong sense of weightlessness and couldn't help but ask, "What's happening?! Stark!"
"It appears that the mastermind behind all this intended to kill us by crashing the Airbus One into the ground."
Tony remained completely calm, as if everything was going according to plan: "Given our altitude, free fall would take at least a minute, although the plane would have already disintegrated before that."
"What should we do then?"
"Why don't you sit down and relax with a cup of coffee?"
Tony laughed nonchalantly. Then, with a slight jolt, the plane seemed to regain its steady flight. President Ellis looked at Tony, puzzled, wondering what he had done. He then went back into the cockpit with Tony. There, another brand-new, completely different suit of armor stood intact.
He looked out the window in confusion and saw the Quinjet fighters accompanying the Airbus One, while below the Airbus One, Thor was holding the entire aircraft steady and slowly landing.
"We'll get you to a safe place first, Your Excellency, and then we'll take care of AIM," Tony said with a smile to the president. "However, I do have a small personal request that I hope you can grant."
"You said, Mr. Stark."
"Regarding Stark Industries' acquisition of Trasco Industries, I hope Stark Industries will not face any political pressure or antitrust investigations. Is that alright?"
I owe six chapters; I'll try to make up for it in the next few days.
