Chapter 618: The Hidden Danger
Chapter 618: The Hidden Danger
Back in the sect, everything was going on as usual.
Chu Miao teleported everyone there when the wind was picking up.
One would be completely shocked by the difference between the inside and outside the sect.
Outside the protective barrier of the sect, the world had once again descended into chaos. Buildings groaned under the pressure of the wind, loose debris flew like deadly blades, and the sky was swallowed by a thick veil of dust and darkness.
Chu Miao stood by the window, her arms folded as she watched the storm without blinking.
Her expression was unreadable.
But those who knew her well could tell that she was in deep thought, probably planning for the future.
A knock came at her bedroom door all of a sudden, startling her and pulling her out of her thoughts.
"Come in." She said softly, but the person outside heard her clearly.
The door was pushed open and Ye Xuan walked in.
"Why do you look like the weight of the world is on your shoulder? Aren’t you happy that today you helped many people secure a chance at survival because of the charity you did in the name of selling supplies?" He asked as soon as he walked into the room.
Chu Miao was quiet for a moment before she spoke.
"I was thinking about that zombie king. Why does it feel like it’s teasing us?"
Ye Xuan was also quiet for a while before replying.
"You felt it today again, right?" He asked. His voice was softer than before.
"It was the same presence from before. It appeared briefly at the market... then disappeared again."
Ye Xuan’s eyes darkened with something unreadable flashing in his eyes.
"Still no trace?"
"None." She shook her head. "It’s more cautious than anything we’ve encountered so far."
Chu Miao pauses for a moment before continuing.
"That’s what makes it dangerous."
They were no strangers to powerful enemies.
But an enemy that could hide from their divine sense?
That was something else entirely. So, they had to be more careful.
"It doesn’t matter. We will deal with whatever comes our way. Let’s talk with the others in the living room." Ye Xuan said, pulling Chu Miao towards the door.
In the living room, the others had gathered.
Chu Hao sat sprawled on the sofa, tossing a crystal core up and down absentmindedly.
"So... we made a lot of enemies today, huh?" he said casually.
Murong Yi chuckled. "That depends on how you define enemies."
"Oh, come on." Chu Hao scoffed. "We undercut prices, attracted all the customers, and basically told everyone else ’your business is finished.’ If that doesn’t make enemies, I don’t know what does."
"That just means they weren’t strong enough to keep their position." Jing Xian said bluntly.
"In this world, strength determines everything."
"Still..." Li Pan hesitated. "Should we be worried about retaliation?"
"No." Ye Xuan’s voice came from behind them as he walked into the room.
Everyone turned to look at him.
"They won’t act immediately."
"Why?" Li Kun asked.
"Because they don’t understand us yet." Ye Xuan replied calmly.
"They don’t know where we come from. They don’t know how strong we are. And they don’t know what backing we have."
He paused slightly.
"Unknown variables... are the most dangerous."
The group nodded in understanding.
"So they’ll observe first?" Qi Long asked.
"Yes." Chu Miao also joined the conversation.
"Without solid belief that they could eliminate us, they won’t act recklessly." She added.
"They will test us with more instances like what happened today with that man who caused trouble. This is to probe us and look for weaknesses."
Grandpa Chu walked into the room while speaking.
Chu Hao had been summoned as soon as he came back.
As it turned out, it was to find out what had happened that day.
Hearing Chu Hao narrate what happened and even embellishing the details made the family members smile.
He Yan was the happiest because her goal was achieved.
"They won’t find any weakness, because we are each other’s strength." Chu Miao said with a smile.
That night, the sect remained quiet and peaceful. Everyone slept soundly without a worry about their roof getting torn off by the wind.
But beyond the sect’s walls, things were far from peaceful.
However, during the day when the four hours window started, Chu Miao and her team headed to the market.
They did this everyday without fail. As a result, they affected other people’s business and even shifted the entire market.
In the same building where the earlier meeting had taken place, the atmosphere had grown even heavier.
Reports had started coming in.
"They sold out most of their stock."
"Customer flow increased by over seventy percent compared to previous days."
"Other traders are already lowering their prices."
The man at the head of the table listened silently.
His fingers tapped lightly against the surface.
"What have you discovered about them? What are their weaknesses?" He asked.
"We haven’t found anything." Someone replied.
"What about conflicts? Did they get into a fight with anyone?" He asked again.
"No, they didn’t." A subordinate replied.
"And the tracing attempts?" He asked once more, this time with hope in his eyes.
The subordinate hesitated, then bit his lower lip and replied with shame.
"...Failed."
That made the room even quieter.
That meant their trackers had been unable to follow the group after they left.
That could only mean one thing.
"They have spatial abilities." One of the men said slowly.
The leader’s eyes narrowed.
"Interesting."
A group with powerful combat ability, abundant resources, and spatial movement...
This was no ordinary faction.
"Continue observing them. Don’t let your guard down." he ordered.
"But increase the surveillance."
"And the other traders?" someone asked.
"They’re already panicking."
"Good." The leader smiled faintly. "Let them act first."
"You mean...?"
"Pressure creates mistakes. This is our chance."
While this group was discussing countermeasures, far beyond the city.
Inside a collapsed business complex center that had been swallowed by creeping vegetation...
The figure with glowing eyes stirred again.
This time, it stood in the darkness.
It was tall, with broad shoulders and resembled humans completely.
Around it, dozens of intelligent zombies knelt in absolute submission.
Their expressions were stiff and their eyes were empty of rebellion.
It was as if they were puppets, controlled by something.
"Those clever ones have begun to move." The figure said with a deep voice that could never be associated with a zombie.
A second figure stepped forward slightly.
"Should we intervene?"
"No."
The first figure replied immediately.
"Aren’t they helping us fatten more prey? Let them continue."
A faint smile curved its lips.
"The stronger they become...the more valuable they are to us. Isn’t it better to leave them alone?"
Its gaze turned toward the distant city.
Even though walls and storms stood in the way...
It was as if it could see everything.
"They think they are hunting us, but they don’t realize that they are being cultivated."
The air suddenly felt colder with an oppressive aura..
Back at the sect, Chu Miao suddenly opened her eyes.
She couldn’t sleep at night, so she had been meditating.
It was better to continue cultivating than stay idle.
Her brows furrowed so tightly they could kill a fly.
"What is it?" Ye Xuan, who had insisted on cultivating together with her, also opened his eyes and asked, sensing the change immediately.
"...Nothing concrete." she said slowly.
"But I have a bad feeling. I don’t know why."
Ye Xuan didn’t dismiss her doubts.
Because Chu Miao’s instincts had saved them more than once while they were still growing in the Immortal Realm.
"Then let’s just prepare and get stronger." He said.
"That is the only way." Chu Miao said with a sigh before closing her eyes again to continue cultivating.
The next day when the four hour window came as usual, the team prepared to leave the sect again.
Chu Miao called everyone to the square outside to talk to them before they departed.
"Everyone be alert." Chu Miao said as the group gathered.
"We’re not the only ones watching anymore."
"You mean the market?" Chu Hao asked.
"It’s not just the people running the market who are watching us. There are other things that are far more dangerous than those tyrants. So, be careful." She added.
Everyone had heard the rumors about the zombie king and the intelligent zombies. So, they understood the warning.
"Okay, are we leaving now?" Someone from the gathering asked eagerly.
"Not yet. Today we will split into two groups. One will go to the market and the other will go hunting. A new gathering point of zombies was discovered. It’s better to go and get rid of them all." Chu Miao explained her plan.
"I’ll go hunting." Chu Hao said immediately.
"Same." Qi Long added.
"Count me in." Jing Xian said.
